Color correction is the first step in the post-production color workflow. At Granon Films we save that for last because it can be a bit slow on some computer systems. Don’t worry, even if you have a slow computer you can still fo a color correction. But why would you need to?

• Fixing white balance issues

• Adjusting exposure and contrast

• Ensuring uniform color tones across multiple shots (think blue sky vs green sky)

• Applying color LUTs, or Look-Up Tables, to establish a film’s style

  • This is an easy way to get a consistent look across your video. Sometimes, though, it can do strange things to indevidual clips.

  • Always watch your movie through after applying a LUT to make sure it didn’t mess up some important part of the shadows and highlights, or that pop of red in that corner which is so important to that shot.

• Creating warm or cool tones to match the story’s emotions

  • Like adding a LUT, make sure the warm or cool cast doesn’t turn your actors skin into a nasty green or strange purple. This is where many colorists, including Brooke, like to get in detail and use the Vectorscope in Davinci Resolve (a free coloring and editing software) to keep skin tones the same.

• Adding contrast and depth to enhance visual impact

  • In programs like Davinci Resolve or Adobe Photoshop and FinalCut Pro, there are many fantastic tools to tweak and manipulate the contrast to create or remove drama in a scene. Brooke’s favorite is the Curves tool in Resolve, which applies a quick and easy contrast adjustment that is simple to adjust later on in the coloring process if needed.

• Achieving the signature "film look" that sets professional productions apart

  • The secret? A subtle green tint, not too yellow or too blue. Keep the skin tones in line with what they should be, but if your film is anything like Joker, Barbie, or Wicked, you can still go crazy with that stylized touch of color.
